“A novel of grit, independence, and determination … An intelligent story, well told.” -RenĂ©e Thompson, author of The Plume Hunter and The Bridge at Valentine

At the close of the Victorian Era, society still expected middle-class women to be “the angels of the house,” even as a select few strived to become something more. In this time of change, Emeline Evans dreamed of becoming a nurse. But when her father dies unexpectedly, Emeline sacrifices her ambitions and rescues her family from destitution by marrying John Dorr, a reserved lawyer who can provide for her family.

John moves Emeline to the remote Missouri town of Labellum and into an unusual Gothic house where her sorrow and uneasiness edge toward madness. Furniture twists and turns before her eyes, people stare out at her from empty rooms, and the house itself conspires against her. The doctor diagnoses hysteria, but the treatment merely reinforces the house’s grip on her mind.

Emeline only finds solace after pursuing an opportunity to serve the poor as an unlicensed nurse. Yet in order to bring comfort to the needy she must secretly defy her husband, whose employer viciously hunts down and prosecutes unlicensed medical practitioners. Although women are no longer burned at the stake in 1900, disobedience is a symptom of psychological defect, and hysterical women must be controlled.

For William Barrow, two thousand years is a very long time…too long, when it is a perpetual punishment for betraying Jesus Christ. The man originally known as Judas Iscariot is on a mission to recover thirty silver shekels once paid to him for his ultimate treachery. Twenty-two coins have been recovered, leaving just eight to go. But when his Russian nemesis, Viktor Kaslow, also becomes immortal, the stakes are immediately raised.

Kaslow has followed William and his son, Alistair, to Hong Kong in search of a 'blood coin' passed down through Genghis Khan. The coin presently belongs to an esteemed Chinese collection. But along with the coin are other cursed items from the famed Mongol Emperor. William soon learns he can't have the 'one' without the others. William has waited eight hundred years for a second chance to reclaim this particular coin that inspired the Mongolian Empire's bloody violence it was once famous for.

While Kaslow closes in, seeking his own vengeance, William and Alistair race against the CIA and an unscrupulous American businessman intent on reaching the cursed 'treasure trove' before them. Much is at stake for the Barrows and the world, as a deadly weapon unseen for centuries lies in wait alongside blood coin number twenty-three…

You get to the point where you can just say it. There was never anything special about me, except my father is rich and important. That’s why it happened. It was just a normal Tuesday afternoon. I was twenty-three and thinking about my new designer boots. They kidnapped me for ransom. They raped me before I was rescued.

My therapist says that talking about it means I’m starting to heal. I don’t really think I am. It’s even harder to talk about Gideon. He couldn’t save me when it really mattered, so he keeps trying to save me now. He refuses to give up on me, and I can’t make him understand. There are some things you just can’t be saved from.

The year is two thousand and thirteen. The United States is braced for a potential government shutdown and a US default on its debt. Washington is at the height of political dysfunction. Renowned Harvard professor, Winston Bernard Huntster II, has just aired a controversial documentary on the History Channel.

To the mass of American viewers, it is an eerily striking comparison to the egocentric arrogance of the political landscape of present day. It is, to the millions of Americans tuned in, the fuel that would fire a movement to stop the reckless abuses in Washington D.C.

Now, the man behind the firestorm is found dead in Boston Common from a gunshot wound to the head. His death has outraged an angry nation and incited its citizens to take to the streets. They will soon learn there is but one weapon that can crack the stronghold on Capitol Hill—the power of Article V.

“She weaves her deep faith into her story with great levity….This refreshing love story is inspiring to the seeker as it is to the veteran in the faith.” -Roberto G.

A God-fearing man. A God-seeking woman. For Sam Lewis and Lexa Clarke, it proves a combustible combination. Lexa Clarke signs up for a TeamWork Missions summer assignment expecting adventure in a far-off, exotic country. Instead, she’s sent to sweltering San Antonio to help rebuild homes destroyed by sudden flooding.

She survives the four-hour bus trip from Houston, dust in the lungs, a flat tire, a tool-throwing incident and a spitting goat – not to mention an inquisition from a distractingly handsome cowboy – all before reaching the work camp. Team Work director Sam Lewis isn’t sure what to think of his newest volunteer. She’s feisty, witty, and incredibly pretty, but looks more prepared to board a cruise ship than build houses.

Burned by a past betrayal, he’s got a job to do, a reputation to uphold. Sam can’t afford to be distracted by a woman who attracts animals, defies his rules, finds trouble at every turn and questions God’s purpose. But when she tumbles from the top beam of one of the houses into his arms, Sam suspects his life will never be the same. During their weeks together in the TeamWork camp, Sam and Lexa learn the power of forgiveness and healing.

Enduring a chain of incidents which challenge their faith, trust and growing relationship, they look to the Lord for guidance as together they discover a love greater than either could ever imagine. At the end of the eight-week work camp, Sam is committed to a year-long, dangerous overseas mission for TeamWork. Can Lexa trust the Lord enough to let him go? It seemed only natural to nickname them the 'Onslow Boys'. Every time they swaggered in the front door of the Onslow Hotel after a hard week's work, their laughter was loud and genuine as they settled onto their bar stools. I peeked through the restaurant partition, a flimsy divider between my world and theirs. I couldn't help but smile whenever I saw them, saw him … Toby Morrison.

Quiet seventeen-year-old Tess doesn't relish the thought of a summertime job. She wants nothing more than to forget the past haunts of high school and have fun with her best friends before the dreaded Year Twelve begins. To Tess, summer is when everything happens: riding bikes down to the lake, watching the fireworks at the Onslow Show and water bomb fights at the sweltering Sunday markets.

How did she let her friends talk her into working? After first-shift disasters, rude, wealthy tourists and a taunting ex-boyfriend, Tess is convinced nothing good can come of working her summer away. However, Tess finds unlikely allies in a group of locals dubbed 'The Onslow Boys', who are old enough to drive cars, drink beer and not worry about curfews.

Tess's summer of working expands her world with a series of first times with new friends, forbidden love and heartbreaking chaos. All with the one boy she has never been able to forget. It will be a summer she will always remember.

An Order of Coffee and Tears – Nook

Angela’s Diner has the reputation of a safe haven where patrons find a moment of peace as they linger over coffee and tears. For one young runaway, Angela’s is more than a place to tell your tale — it’s a place where with the magic of chicken and waffles, and a little bit of trust, may just save your life.

Gabriella Santiago used to be a typical teenager who enjoyed the usual teenage things. That is until a single tragic day ended who she was and within hours she ran from home, never to look back.

Only when Gabby is cold, hungry and at her lowest, does she find Angela’s Diner. Gabby embraces her new life and the family she has found in the midst of strangers and obscurity.

Acceptance is what she craves, but before long, Gabby realizes she’s not the only one in the diner with something to hide. Her new family has a secret too, and some secrets refuse to stay buried.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

Brian creates a really wonderful tale in his recent book, An Order of Coffee and Tears. He knows how to write the suspense, the fears of everyday life and how difficult it can be living with an earth-shattering secret. His sense of family among friends is truly astounding.

*******

This is a very moving and touching story. It actually made my eyes tear up. This book is both sad and uplifting at the same time!

*******

This is one of those rare novels that introduces you to some characters who feel like your close friends as the story progresses. Even without the suspense of waiting to learn the back-stories of the main characters, every page is still a delight. The characters totally stole my heart, and I found myself longing to encounter them in their throw-back diner.

*******

I was intrigued by the title and delighted with the story. It’s just a great book to curl up with on a rainy day. I truly enjoyed it.

*******

I found I could not put the book down and when I had free time I made sure I spent it reading this book. It was a wonderful book, well written with a surprising ending. I felt Mr. Spangler made the characters come to life and I also found that I was left wanting more.
