Amazon’s First Retail Store is Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

Posted: 30 Nov 2013 02:21 PM PST

Remember the BN-AP289_Amazon_G_20131129134535[1]Amazon retail store that was absolutely positively opening in Spring 2012?

The timing of the rumors were off by about 16 months, but the first store may have opened earlier this month in San Fransisco. The WSJ says that a pop-up store/kiosk opened up for a couple weeks in an SF-area mall:

The Seattle retailer has a pop-up shop within a San Francisco mall where it is selling the devices as well as branded covers and power adapters from vending machines. There are sample Kindles on display for shoppers to test.

At the San Francisco popup store, Kindle Paperwhite e-readers were displayed on shelves beside well-worn hardcover books like a volume of Lord Byron's poetry and Charles Dickens' "The Pickwick Papers." Two women staffed the site in Kindle-branded denim shirts.

Amazon reportedly set up booths in 2 locations at the Westfield San Francisco Centre mall, including a small booth and this larger installation shown below:

BN-AP289_Amazon_G_20131129134535[1]

Both locations are temporary and it’s not completely clear whether they’re staffed by anyone from Amazon. While Amazon has been hiring Kindle field reps since June of this year, those reps would likely be more willing to talk than the one employee cornered by the WSJ reporter. She did not give her name, and said she is not an Amazon employee.

So, do you think this means Amazon might actually be interested in a retail store?

The rumors of the past couple years were pretty conclusively disproved last Fall when Jeff Bezos denied any interest in opening Kindle-branded retail stores, but he did also say that Amazon didn’t see how they could run a store that was better than existing retailers. Maybe these  pop up stores are a sign that Amazon is testing a new idea for retail.

I don’t think so, but times change.

If nothing else, who would have guessed that Amazon would put their logo on a chain of retail kiosks in Brazil? Those kiosks sold Kindle gear, but were operated by the Brazilian cellphone retailer Superfone, which at one point had 9 Kindle kiosks. Perhaps Amazon is testing a similar idea for the US.

Many are probably going to point out that Amazon is short of retail partners now that Target, Walmart, and other major retailers have stopped carrying the Kindle, and even with the one or 2 indie retailers that Amazon manages to pick up under the Amazon Source program won’t be enough to fill the gap.

While that is true I am not convinced that Amazon’s own chain of retail stores can solve the problem either;  there’s no way Amazon could open enough locations to match Walmart or Target.

And it’s not like the Kindle hardware has the profit margins of Apple gadgetry, so any retail location run by Amazon just to sell Kindles would probably be a money-losing operation.

With that in mind I am going to stick with my current disbelief. There just isn’t enough evidence to convince me to change my mind.

Is the Internet a Greater Threat to Publishers than Self-Pub eBooks?

Posted: 30 Nov 2013 12:31 PM PST

Did youDavid-Hessayon_2750886b[1] catch the article in The Telegraph today?

The well-known British horticulturalist and author, David Hessayon, is retiring at the age of 85. While this would not normally rate a post, I was intrigued by one of the quotes.

Dr Hessayon laments that the internet is having a negative effect on the market for non-fiction titles:

"My The Bedding Plant Expert was in the top 10 of all non-fiction books but that won't happen again. People don't have time for books when they're always on Google, Twitter or Facebook.

"The garden reference book market has declined because of the internet. In the future I'll offer people gardening advice but I won't write any more. If you have a problem you go on the internet. I pity anyone new coming into writing. Five years ago, all the bestselling gardening books were how-to-do-it books. Now it's look at my garden or look at other people's gardens.

"The how-to-do-it book has lost its absolute supremacy. To write a bestseller now you need to choose something that you can't look up on Google."

5378834706_be8881f599_o[1]I’m not sure how much weight I would put a critique of the publishing industry from someone whose 40 plus books aren’t available digitally (with a single exception), but it is an interesting premise is it not?

It’s an idea that I have not heard mentioned very often but it has been rattling around publishing circles since at least 2000, when a prescient literary agent wrote:

I've done a lot of work lately researching the impact the Internet is having on writing and publishing. And, in doing so, I see a trend that could hurt the nonfiction writer's income. I don't have a lot of hard data to back up what I'm going to say here, but I think for many authors it may have the sting of recognition.

The free availability of information on the Internet may dilute the earning potential of nonfiction books. The Internet itself has become a competitor.

A similar criticism was expressed in Andrew Keen’s 2007 book, The Cult of the Amateur. Working from a viewpoint that had much in common with Robert Levine’s Free Ride,  Keen argued that web companies didn’t actually create anything but instead were decimating the culture businesses (to use Levine’s phrasing) :

"What you may not realize is that what is free is actually costing us a fortune," Mr. Keen writes. "The new winners — Google, YouTube, MySpace, Craigslist, and the hundreds of start-ups hungry for a piece of the Web 2.0 pie — are unlikely to fill the shoes of the industries they are helping to undermine, in terms of products produced, jobs created, revenue generated or benefits conferred. By stealing away our eyeballs, the blogs and wikis are decimating the publishing, music and news-gathering industries that created the original content those Web sites 'aggregate.' Our culture is essentially cannibalizing its young, destroying the very sources of the content they crave."

Sidenote: If you’re not familiar with either author, let me add that I have yet to read Keen’s book but I was struck by how the quote (copied from an NY Times review) shared Levine’s viewpoint that culture is created not by people but by companies. Naturally I disagree.

Getting back to the main topic, I have come across yet another version of this lament on a blog post by Alan Canton dating to 2010:

Publishing was so, so, so much easier in the 80s and 90s before the internet killed off so much of non-fiction publishing. Back then if you wanted to fix your bicycle or plant a garden you bought a book on bike repair or gardening. Not anymore. Today you go to a website where you will find a video on how to take apart your exact bike or a website with an interactive fill-in-the-form program on how to design and plant a garden in the exact amount of space you have.

Everyone is sitting on the edge of their chair hoping and praying that ebooks will be their salvation. I too am hopeful, but not as optimistic as others.

Four different industry insiders have made the same argument over the past 13 years; is there any truth to it?

Yes and no – but mostly no.

4112145071_bfd1e1eaf8[1]Yes, the internet has made it easier and cheaper to find new info on a wide range of topics. While this has been to the detriment of some publishing entities, it has also enabled experts of all stripes to share what they know.

The technical expert with the Youtube channel, the hobbyist with a website, and the community of enthusiasts are all examples of expertise that the publishing industry used monopolize but cannot any more. (They also stand as examples of Levine and Keen being wrong when they argue that businesses create content, but that’s not strictly relevant here.) Many of these folks would never have made it through the old gatekeepers. Some don’t have time to write a book, while others don’t have the skills. But that doesn’t mean they’re not experts.

So yes, the internet has broken up the distribution monopoly, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing nor does it mean that existing publishing entities can’t survive or thrive in the new publishing industry.

Please note the distinction I made in the above paragraph; like indie authors those unpaid experts who are sharing their knowledge via Youtube, websites, or Wikipedia are arguably just as much a part of the new publishing industry as existing publishing entities.

IMG_0642And that’s why there are startups (and even legacy publishers) which are already looking for bloggers who are technical experts and might, with enough support, write a book. Hyperink is one such startup, and I’m sure there’s more. (For more details on how to go about it, check out Laura Matthews’ post on Joel Friedlander’s The Book Designer blog.)

Since I have wandered far afield, let me restate the original question:

Is the internet harming nonfiction publishing?

In some ways, yes, but in other ways it can help. A web presence can compliment book sales both as a promotional channel and a new revenue channel (and not just from sales or distribution). Some in publishing, including Seth Godin, have already figured that out.

Take F+W Media, for example. This thriving non-fiction publisher is divided into multiple business units, each of which focuses on a single topic or interest. All (most?) of the units include an online presence (blog and/or community) which compliments the content which is being sold to readers and to advertisers. They don’t show any sign of being harmed by competing sources of free information.

In conclusion, I really have trouble accepting the argument that the internet is ruining publishing. It is changing publishing, yes, but I predict that the long term effect will be closer to the what we see happening in the music industry.

6256317164_b132e2154c[1]All those experts I mentioned above are like the musicians who no longer have to go through a record label to reach an audience. While that is detrimental to the recording industry, the music industry as a whole has benefited.

Similarly, in the long run the experts will be able to make more from working around the legacy gatekeepers than they could by working with them. We are already seeing that happen with some indie authors and I expect the trend to strengthen.

And that’s why I think publishing will also gain more than it loses. Or at least that’s my 2 cents; what do you think?

P.S. I’d like to extend my appreciation to Mike Shatzkin and Brian O’Leary for helping gel my thoughts on this topic. Thanks, guys!

Despite everything and everyone telling her to stay away from Lucas, Kate is inexplicably drawn to him. Her coven is not pleased. After all, it's bad manners to play with your food.

As Kate's unique powers begin to manifest, she becomes deadly in a way she never anticipated.

Her powers are volatile and unpredictable – much like Kate herself – and should she fail to get control of them, the biggest threat to both she and Lucas is herself.

“A dazzling novel, capturing that complex mix of lightness and darkness that is New Orleans.” -Robert B.

Surrounded by the splendor and excess of old money in New Orleans, Eleanor Rushing is a wry and witty young woman who first locks eyes with the love of her life at a City Council meeting—or so we're led to believe.

What starts as an innocuous infatuation with Dr. Maxim Walters, a Methodist minister who just so happens to be married already, quickly turns into an outrageous and obsessive passion:

she orchestrates an automobile accident outside his house, volunteers to stuff envelopes at his church, follows him to Nashville on a business venture, sets up camp in the toolshed in his backyard…

Eleanor's voice is both acutely perceptive and macabrely unhinged. She considers herself blessed with the ability to "remember everything," except that her recollections and impressions seem to be at odds with everyone around her.

As her "relationship" with Dr. Walters begins to spin frantically out of control, we can’t help being her willing and faithful admirers.

“My hope,” said TYCtaBD founder and Cover of Snow author Jenny Milchman, “is that by drawing awareness to the pleasures of time spent in a bookstore at a young age, kids who take part will grow up to value and support bookstores in the communities of the future.”

TakeYourChildToABookstoreBanner[1]

This event has grown significantly since it was first held in 2010. 80 indie bookstores participated that year, and 3 years later over 600 bookstores are expected to take part, including more than one hundred Half Price Books locations as well as bookstores all 50 states, DC, 7 Canadian provinces, Australia, Germany, and England.

Many stores are using the occasion to encourage families to shop together during the holiday season. At Half Price Books, for example, the participating locations are planning special events to make the day memorable. The chain is also providing a coloring sheet for children who visit a store on 7 December.

I’m sure we all have fond memories of bookstores; it’s that place where (judging based on my last trip to B&N) one can go to buy music, games, toys, or an expensive cup of coffee, which also happens to stock a few books.

Cybook Ocean eReader Delayed

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 07:54 AM PST

Bookeen’s newBookeen Cybook Ocean 8″ ereader won’t be coming out this year.

While French ereader maker Bookeen had originally planned to release the Cybook Ocean before Christmas, they recently announced that this device is going to be delayed by a few months, giving it a new launch date in the first quarter of 2014.

I must say, this is a lot of attention that no one has actually seen yet. No, seriously, all that Bookeen has released are a few clearly photoshopped images like the one below.

bookeen cybook ocean

According to Bookeen’s past announcements, the Cybook Ocean has an 8″ screen with a resolution of 1024 x 768 (close to the same as on the latest 6″ screens). It comes with Wifi, a touchscreen, a frontlight, and 4GB Flash storage and a microSD slot.  Battery life is expected to be around 10 weeks, though it’s not clear whether that is with the frontlight on or off.

Of course, none of these details have been confirmed by any blogger, but this is what bookeen has stated on their blog.

The Cybook Ocean was supposed to have shipped by now, with a retail price of 160 euros.

Assuming that price has not changed, the Cybook Ocean will cost about 10 euros less than the Kobo Aura HD. With a 6.8″ screen, Aura HD has a smaller but much higher resolution screen. It is also unfortunately crippled by being tied to Kobo’s servers (registration and account setup required), so I am torn between recommending the sharper screen and decrying the virtual chains.

The Cybook Ocean also costs about 20 euros more than competing 8″ ereaders like the Icarus8, most of which do not have a frontlight or touchscreen.

“MS Kayse takes us back to the Roman Era with wonderful descriptions and a truly wonderful romance..” -Mrs. Helen S.

Jared of Alexandria shuns both his Roman and Hebrew blood, a curse that's kept him on the fringes of society, to become a powerful and successful merchant prince.

When his trading empire is threatened by an unknown enemy who not only wants to see him ruined but dead as well, he uses every means to put an end to it.

He turns to a beautiful barbarian seer, a slave with hair the color of firelight and eyes that shine like emeralds only to be betrayed into a fate worse than death—slavery.

Bryna of Eire lives each day burdened by the yoke of Rome and her own guilt for leading her beloved brother and clansmen into Rome's clutches.

She curses the gift of sight which her master exploits, keeping her under lock and key, telling fortunes and fattening his purse.

When an opportunity to be freed of her confinement comes, Bryna takes it, though her instincts warn that lying to the sensual, golden-eyed man that plagues her visions risks her very soul.

Betrayed into slavery, Jared labors under the lash envisioning revenge on the seer who sent him into this hell. But when fate throws Bryna into his arms, he finds exacting vengeance a different matter.

As they escape, evade bounty hunters and face their pasts, Jared must battle not only his enemy but his heart. Can the differences that separate them draw them together to save their lives and their love?

Were they opposites? Or soul mates? Finding she had a perpetually unfaithful husband had been hard to cope with as a newly wed and newly certified marriage counselor.

Still, that wasn't as hard as finding her husband had a newborn daughter with a teenager—effectively ending both her marriage, and the career Monet McLaughlin had spent seven years building. That'll leave a mark.

It's why she absolutely knows not to trust the hunky male model who shows up two years later at her therapy horse stable to do a photo shoot for romance novel covers.

Certainly no one who looks like that, and makes a living being that intimate with that many women, has a shred of moral integrity—do they?

They both know they are far too opposite for even a casual relationship, so then what the heck is going on here?
Cynics can heal—if they're brave enough.

When San Diego weathercaster, Jaswinder Park, is mysteriously summoned to the island of Maui in Hawaii to help her grandmother, she ends up losing her job. This fair-haired, light-skinned foreigner, called haole by the natives, decides to stay in Maui for a couple of days until she can figure out what to do with her life. She realizes that her quick trip to Maui may not be all she's hoping for when:

-She has to bail her Hawaiian/Korean grandmother out of jail for possession of pakalolo.

-The only thing she can understand her grandmother say is: "Not that."

-She can't decide which hurts worse, her sunburn, hangover, or memories of the night before.

-She's labeled the "Liquor Licker" on the front page of the Maui News in a photo that shows her doing a shot of tequila with a hunky Hawaiian who's been found dead.

-It seems she's had orgasms that have lasted longer than her career.

-She scrapes the bottom of the barrel to find her guardian angel.

Beautiful fabric found in her grandmother's closet unfolds a future for Jaswinder as she designs sensuous silky wraps called sunshminas that provide sun protection. She tries for a Hollywood connection, but her company, Haole Wood, has some growing pains. From trying to find a killer, to selling her sunshminas, to lusting after Dr. Jac, the island dermatologist, to trying to ignore her so-called guardian angel, can Jaswinder learn to embrace the island way of life? About The Author

DEE DeTARSIO is a TV writer living in southern California. After growing up in Ennui, Ohio, and graduating from The Ohio State University she vowed never to be cold again (in a tantrum more worthy of Suellen than Scarlett) and ended up in Tucson, Arizona, producing the news for the CBS affiliate, oddly enough called KOLD-TV. She moved to San Diego where she worked in the SeaWorld entertainment department as a producer/writer. (Penguins are mean!) She then became a producer/writer for the NBC affiliate.

Though her mother never beat her (that hard) and her father is not a celebrity, she suspects one of her four sisters is a vampire.

Thank you for considering today’s Book Of The Day – Dee DeTarsio and ENT appreciate it.
