When up-and-coming young Wall Street executive Spiro loses his job in a corporate downsizing, he spirals into an ever-deepening depression. Defined by his work, he suddenly realizes he has no real clue who he is outside that work. As Spiro drifts aimlessly, seeking direction and meaning, he tries bartending before leaving New York for Paris and later his ancestral homeland of Greece.

It is here, thanks to a grandfatherly old friend, that he discovers his previous efforts were all focused on "doing" rather than "being" and that the true definition of a man is in his accumulated lifetime experiences, not in his job or his salary. Buoyed by this realization, Spiro returns to New York to begin his life anew.

And they wanted to be just like him. Emil Radle wanted to be just like him. A dedicated member of Hitler Youth, Emil was loyal to the Fuehrer before family, a champion for the cause and a fan of the famous Luftwaffe Air force.

Emil’s friends Moritz and Johann discover a shortwave radio and everything changes. Now they listen to the forbidden BBC broadcast of news reports that tell both sides. Now they know the truth.

“…kept my interest all the way through, with good, complex characters…” -Marlene D.

A space adventure novel for boys and girls (and the parents who love reading books to their late primary-school aged children!). By Writers of the Future winning author Patty Jansen. Of all the things ten-year-old Cory Wilson expects to do when he moves to Midway Space Station, saving aliens from humans isn’t one.

An important conference is about to start at the station, not usually the sort of thing kids care about, not even when the conference is between humans and aliens, and half your family is alien. However, when bullies tease Cory, he ends up in a prohibited area where he overhears some men planning to plant a bomb at the conference.

Because the terrorists hide their messages in computer games, no one believes Cory, not even his father, the station director. Kids at school think he’s crazy, some even think aliens should be bombed. The conference starts, the aliens have brought a very important person, and Cory’s teacher, one of the terrorists, locks Cory in the classroom. Can he get out in time? If he does, will anyone listen?

Lance Pototschnik and his friends must have booked their trip with that agency. Their incredibly affordable “vacation” was meant to be a relaxing time to meditate on the direction of their languid, aimless lives. Instead, they are introduced to hell and the insane diversity of its tortures.

Marooned on a remote sea turtle conservancy with a handful of fellow unanchored souls, Pototschnik, in his hilarious debut memoir, ponders who he essentially is, and what he is likely to become. But he speaks to all of us. In Pototschnik, those who have fallen prey to the desolation of broken dreams, the young and the listless, finally find a voice with the talent to cast out demons and turn them into laughs.

Through his own outrageous tale, Pototschnik offers the questions of the brooding, the concerns of the anxious and the hopes of the hopeless in a witty, irrepressible voice that will not shame them. Beneath its shell, this rollicking, episodic story is also a treatise about finding your purpose, realizing your full potential and learning to love your own life.

Pototschnik’s very personal book happens to be the story we have all been hoping for. The Shell of a Person is one of the best books by an emerging author this year.

What happens when a successful, determined middle-aged man falls in love with a woman who has been happily married for twenty-seven years? If he’s Avery Laird, he hires her to work for him.

Buddy Middleton is positive that the job his wife, Ginger, is offered is too good to be true, that Avery Laird has an ulterior motive, but he can’t prove it. When Buddy voices his doubts and urges her not to take it, he makes Ginger feel as though she isn’t worth the offer. Determined to prove him wrong, Ginger goes to work for Laird and saves him over half a million dollars in the first real estate deal she handles for his company.

Flush with success, Ginger believes that the problems she and Buddy had are over. But then they have an unexpected guest from the past, a fellow named Hoot with whom Buddy played professional baseball when they were newly married. Hoot tells Ginger the true reason Buddy quit baseball, a subject they had always avoided. When Ginger confronts Buddy with what she has learned, trouble really begins… and Avery is there waiting.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

Loved this story it made me think about how many times my own marriage has changed and what if anything could come between me and my husband.

*******

This book was great. Very down to earth on things that really happen in today’s world. The way the author writes it while you are reading it you feel like you are part of what is going on.

*******

Ms. Schwartz is adept at creating scene descriptions and characterizations without overdoing it. This allows you, the reader, to visualize with clarity and keeps the story moving along. Intrigue and curiosity are introduced early in the novel and caused me to keep turning the pages.

*******

I loved this book! I didn’t realize until I finished that it was the same author who wrote The Writers Conference, another fine novel.

*******

Book was well written. The charming story stimulated one to access their own marriage and see what if any changes need to be made. All married couples may benefit from reading this book.

About The Author

I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. Reading was my escape from the legendary Buffalo winters and probably contributed to my becoming a writer. I like strong plots and strong characters. A new book is a new adventure!

The first sentence in my novel REALITIES–My children are gambling–was the first line of a poem which grew into a book that was published in the US, the UK, and Sweden, where it was a selection of the Swedish Book-of-the-Month Club.

THE LAST SEASON, THE STORY OF A MARRIAGE, started with an image of three middle-aged adults sitting at a dinner table, a married couple and an unmarried man. When the husband asked the man what his intentions were, the fellow replied, “I intend to marry your wife.” The image was a gift, and I had to run with it.

The seed for THE WRITERS’ CONFERENCE was an experience I had at a conference. I had never been in an atmosphere that intense. When I came home, I started working on the book. I wanted to capture that intensity.

It took over thirty years to write THE WRITERS’ CONFERENCE. I would take it out every five years, work on it, and put it away again. My goal was a fast, entertaining read that pulled the curtain back on a world most readers will never see.

You can read more about me and my novels–REALITIES, THE LAST SEASON, THE STORY OF A MARRIAGE, and THE WRITERS’ CONFERENCE– and the Giffort Street stories at www.mariandschwartz.com

Thank you for considering today’s Book Of The Day – Marian D. Schwartz and ENT appreciate it.
