Motorola Moto E Smartphone Leaks, Expected to Launch Next Week in Brazil, India, Mexico

Posted: 10 May 2014 01:19 PM PDT

Motorola’sMotorola-Moto-E-press-01[1] first post-Google smartphone isn’t scheduled to debut until next week but thanks to the leaks over the past few days the announcement will  be more confirmation than actual news. Numerous leaks, including from retailers in India and Brazil, have revealed just about every technical detail on this smartphone.

The Moto E is going to be a budget model with a 4.3″ screen and specs a couple steps better than the absolute bottom of the barrel.

This smartphone will run Android 4.4 Kitkat on a dual-core 1.2GHz SnapDragon CPU with 1GB RAM, 4GB Flash storage, a 5MP rear camera, and a microSD card slot. In terms of connectivity it will have dual-SIM card slot, Wifi, Bluetooth, and 3G.

A photo showing the Moto E next to the Moto G (on the left) has already leaked on Facebook. It was taken down, but not before everyone downloaded it.

Weighing in at 140 grams, the Moto E has a battery capacity around 2Ah (sources disagree). The screen will measure 4.3″, but I am getting conflicting reports on the screen resolution. One site says 540 x 960, while another says 720 x 1280. It’s not clear who’s right but I would bet on the lower resolution being the most likely.

The Moto E is expected to be launched at a press event in London on 13 May. The official release date has not been set nor have any details leaked about the price, but at this point we know that it will be carried by Flipkart in India and FashShop in Brazil.

New Rumors Suggest the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Will Launch next Week

Posted: 10 May 2014 11:23 AM PDT

The Microsoftmicrosoft surface mini 2 Surface press event may still be 10 days away but the rumors are coming fast and furious. A new report from Cnet confirms the Surface Mini as well as a new Intel-powered Surface.

A few days ago I reported on a rumor about an 8″ Surface Mini running Windows RT on a Qualcomm CPU. That smaller device is confirmed, and and so is the Intel-powered Surface rumor.

“There’s definitely a new Intel-based Surface,” a chip industry source told Cnet, who added that the media attending the event may “go back” with the Intel-based product. “From what I can assess so far I think it’s going to [have] a new power-optimized Haswell variant,” the source said, not an Atom processor like Intel’s Bay Trail.

And that new Intel-based model is not expected to be a smaller version of the Surface like the Qualcomm-based product, another source added. This person also believes it will be a Haswell-based product.

This is probably a sign that we will be seeing the launch of Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1. The existing models have a 10.6″ screen and sport a Core i5 CPU. Starting with a retail of $900, they’re pricy buggers.

Microsoft has long positioned the Surface Pro tablets as a line of premium desktop-replacement tablets, and that’s why they gave it a CPU usually found in laptops and desktops.

But does anyone actually need that much power in a tablet? Looking at the disappointing sales Microsoft has been posting every quarter (most of which are the cheaper Surface models), I would say few consumers are interested in spending so much on a tablet.
