Ms. Brooks flawlessly captures the experience of a woman in or after a violent relationship, the difficulties of escaping and dealing with a system that does more to perpetuate the abuser’s control than to protect the woman and her children. ******* October Snow, a brisk, absorbing read about some of life’s toughest subjects, made me want to pull up a barstool and go in on a pitcher with Josie, Maxine, and the other vivid characters Brooks renders in her readable, highly detailed prose.
