Period books are usually troublesome for me because they get so bogged down in giving a history lesson that it becomes dry. Not so here, the author wove his facts into the characters so intricately it was seamless.

So much happens in this book that it is also difficult to focus on one aspect of the story. Contrary to what you would think with this many side stories, it is not a jumbled mess. I love the way each component fits into the other. It just feels complete to me. All the story lines are wrapped up at the end, leaving you feeling satisfied.

This book had me reading at every opportunity. The main character is dealing with guilt that spins from an ugly war time situation; which connects him to a family who has been dealing with the fear that guilt creates, for generations. Well done Iain McChesney.

The book weaves a fine blend of tales: the horrors of war, the injustice of social class, the complexities of family, while at its root offering a classic who dunnit – a mystery wrapped in the cloak of historical fiction. Thus it is a story for fans of a variety of genres: historical fiction, ethereal adventure and, of course, mystery.

About The Author

Iain is a writer of gothic mysteries.

He was born and raised in Scotland. He studied History and Geography at the University of Glasgow.

The World Wars left Iain’s family with generations of widows. As a result, Iain has always been interested in the tangible effects of history on family dynamics and in the power of narrative to awaken those long dead. For the characters in The Curse of Malenfer Manor, he drew on childhood reminiscences and verbal family history–though he hastens to add that his family had barely a penny, far less a manor, and any ghosts dwelt only in memory.
