“The story is so powerful and informative that I recommend it to all who care about our history.” -Kathleen B.
Whipped, beaten, worked to death. Not many escaped this life.
But Moses Roper did.
Born into slavery in Caswell County, North Carolina his father was of English descent while his mother was a slave of African-American and Indian American heritage.
When Roper was six he was separated from his mother as his father exchanged them for some other slaves.
Thus began a long period where Roper was passed from slave trader to slave trader because his almost-white complexion made him difficult to sell.
He changed hands more than seventeen times, but he reflects that his cruelest master was Mr Gooch, a Cotton Planter in Cashaw County, South Carolina.
Owing to his pale complexion, Roper had only worked as a domestic slave prior to being purchased by Mr Gooch, but was quickly put to work in the fields doing a job requiring the strength of a fully-grown man even though Roper was just thirteen.
His inability to keep up with the other field laborers earnt him hundreds of floggings, which increased further each time he attempted to escape.
On one occasion, Roper escaped to North Carolina where he was reunited with his mother and grandmother until he was imprisoned by the authorities and returned to Mr Gooch.
In his final escape attempt, Roper was able to reach New York although it took him over a year and by a highly convoluted route across the South and as far north as Vermont.
Roper describes in detail the attitudes of slave owners and traders, as well as the torture techniques used on disobedient slaves.
He also shows the difficulties experienced by former slaves once they reached the northern states and how hard it was to find work without any recommendations from local employers.
He left New York for the United Kingdom in 1835, where this narrative ends, but the appendix contains a piece written in 1846 covering his life in those intervening years.
In Britain he attended university and published this narrative, campaigning rigorously for the abolition of slavery in the United States. The appendix also includes letters and poems from members of the public responding to Roper's work, as well as a list of all the British towns he visited when touring the UK and Ireland.

After the most grueling harvest in Violet Vineyard's twenty-year history, Clare de Montagne is looking forward to her first ever Crush Party. The weather is perfect, the food is fantastic, and the wine is superb. The guests are a mixed bag of thirty old friends, two dozen neighbors, ten business associates…
And one murderer.
No one except Claire is surprised when wine auctioneer Dimitri Pappos is found floating face-down in one of Violet's wine fermentation tanks. Though Dimitri had arrived in Napa only a year before his death, he had quickly managed to create an army of enemies. And every one of them seemed to have shown up at Claire's party.
By the time Napa County Sheriff Hunter Drake has questioned the partygoers, the suspect list is almost as long as the guest list, but when Samson Xenos, Claire's crusty old winemaker and resident curmudgeon, is arrested for the crime, she finds herself thrust into the middle of another murder investigation. An investigation that threatens not only Samson's freedom, but also Claire's relationship with Hunter.
As the killer begins to eliminate every potential witness, Claire races to identify him and stumbles across a chilling, long buried secret that puts her own life in jeopardy.

Ali Jenson’s life changed forever the moment her mother died. What she hadn’t counted on was slowly becoming attached to the grumpy old man and falling in love for the very first time.
Benjamin Jenson never planned on meeting his granddaughter, let alone having her live with him. He wasn’t thrilled with the idea of a teenage girl coming into his home or his life. He’d been down that path once before, and he didn’t want to relive it again. But he is her only living relative, and he knew his deceased wife, Lizzie, would have wanted him to give Ali a home. Grudgingly, he figured he could put up with the girl for a year. He never expected Ali to find a way into his heart and make him face painful past memories and his worst fear. The fear of losing yet another person he loves.
Will Ben finally put away the past and give Ali the one thing she’s always dreamed of? A home.

Political Dawn- The Declaration of Reformation
by An Anonymous American Author

If you think the next election or president of the United States is going to solve our political problems, think again.
The United States government no longer represents the American people. Money has become the dictator of the democratic process. Congress is divided and arguably entirely dysfunctional.
Lawmakers conspire with lobbyists and special interests to create legislation and regulation in their favor, mismanage the public purse, and imperil us and our posterity to deficits and debt in perpetuity. Injustices proliferate; our rights are violated daily.
In short, the Republic is in decline. Democracy is faltering, privacy is perishing, and the Constitution is in extremis. So what can we do? Where do we begin? Welcome to Political Dawn.
Written in broad prose and blunt, unapologetic language that favors no political party, persuasion, or power, other than the powers possessed by the American people and the states, Political Dawn: The Declaration of Reformation catalogues the government's long-standing political problems—which are legion; asserts our fundamental right to reform our own government; and declares the constitutional method and means by which we, the American people and the states, can directly exercise that right, resolve the resolvable defects of government, and successfully achieve the declared goal.
Distinct from other works narrower in scope and that speak to those ideologically aligned with a particular dimension of the political spectrum, this book is for all Americans. So who should read this book? You should read this book, especially if any of the following apply to you:
You are an American citizen, or you are affected in any way by the United States government.
You are interested in politics, bothered by politics, or dissatisfied with politics in the United States.
You would like to learn evidenced-based answers to the following questions:
In what ways does the United States government violate the Constitution and our rights and liberties?
Are the typical means by which we may attempt to affect government, such as by way of elections, adequate to achieve the type of reform that is needed?
What other peaceful, political recourse do we (the American people) have?
If you do not care about the answers to the above questions or about politics in the United States, if you think there is nothing we can lawfully do to resolve our political problems or that the traditional means of reform are sufficient for the task, or if you believe there is nothing wrong with the United States government—then you definitely should read this book.
