Readfy to Launch Ad-Subsidized eBook Service Next Year

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 03:29 PM PST

I’ve never thought ads in ebooks would make a viable business model, but sometime next year that idea is going to be put to the test. A new startup in Germany is building an ad-supported platform, and they plan to launch in the middle of 2014.

Readfy, which is affiliated with the Dusseldorf-based 1stMover startup incubator, was founded in July 2013, by Felix Bauchspiess. The startup had been in stealth mode until earlier this week when Bauchspiess was interviewed by a German tech blog.

According to MobileBranche.de, Readfy is going to launch in a more open beta test next year with 25,000 titles. Bauchspiess wants Readfy to offer a Spotify for ebooks that is free for the end user, and not supported by directly charging users for access (a la Netflix). The goal is to let users read as much as they want and pay publishers from the ad revenues.

Readfy is currently testing their platform with a small, closed beta. They’re working on both the ad network component as well as social reading apps for Android, iPhone, and iPad. They launch in Germany next year, and they are exploring options for an international expansion at a later date.

Will they succeed? We’ll have to wait and see because at this point there is little data to argue either way. What little info I have comes from app creators, most of whom say that ad revenues are not a sustainable business model. And Amazon, which has been selling their hardware with an ad-supported option since mid-2011, has never shared their figures.

And when it comes to ebooks, this model is not new; Bookboon has been publishing free ebooks since 2011. Of course, that firm doesn’t have to pay anyone other than their authors, so they have a slight advantage over Readfy. Also, Bookboon has never revealed their revenue figures (or how much they are paying authors), so they are not exactly a strong argument in favor of an ad-supported business model.

If nothing else Readfy is going to be facing 3 problems that Bookboon, with their internally generated ebooks, manages to avoid. Readfy has to bring in the right amount of users, advertisers, and content, and each one of those could doom this effort if they’re not meticulous.

The Kisai Rorschach ePaper Watch Reduces Time to a Matter of Opinion (video)

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 07:28 AM PST

If you’re in the market for a watch which costs as much as smartwatch and can’t be read without a decoder ring then I have just the thing.

Meet the Kisai Rorschach ePaper Watch from Tokyo Flash. This watch, which has been under development for nearly 3 years, is the first of Tokyo Flash’s watches to feature an E-ink screen.

This watch continues the traditions of Tokyo Flash’s many other uber-geeky watches, and forces the user to learn a new way to tell time. Inspired by its namesake psych test, the Kisai Rorschach ePaper Watch uses unintelligible inkblots to show the time.

I think this one looks like a pretty butterfly, don’t you?

While Tokyo Flash has a reputation to maintain as an uber-geeky watchmaker, they don’t actually see their products as practical joke played on their users and that is why this watch also has a difficulty setting which is easier to decipher, The image above shows the watch on the hard setting; the easy setting simply mirrors the numbers across a vertical divide. That one can probably be read at a glance (once you get used to it).

And that’s probably a good thing, because the first concept design for the display really was the next best thing to unintelligible. You can see one example at right.

I’m glad they changed it in favor of a simpler display, because even with the clue that this represented a quarter til I still couldn’t figure it out.

This watch also has the usual alarms and other options, but let’s be honest; everyone buys a Tkyo Flash watch for the complicated display. In fact, I bet the single most common use is as a sobriety test. (If you can’t interpret the display and tell the time then you are probably too drunk to drive.)

You can find the watch on the TokyoFlash website. It retails for $199, which includes free shipping to (almost?) anywhere in the world.

Staples – $50 Off Any Tablet (Wednesday Only)

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 01:16 PM PST

If you’re looking to start your holiday shopping early then I have a deal for you.

Staples is having a tablets; buy one that retails for more than $150 and you can get $50 off the price. You’ll need the following coupon (or you can just go to the Staples website), which is only good today.

Depending on what you are looking to buy, this could be a very good deal. I am seriously considering using it to get the Archos Gamepad ($120 after the coupon) or possibly the Kindle Fire HDX.

Selection is limited, and a number of tablets are already out of stock online, so it’s going to be a crap shoot whether you get a good deal. But i think it’s worth a shot, don’t you?

P.S. If you want a word of advice, I would stay away from the budget tablets on the Staples website. Those aren’t good tablets, and more importantly they’re not being sold at good prices. You can find a better price on the Walmart website.

Amazon is Prepping for a Conquest of College Bookstores

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 11:43 AM PST

One of the better ways to get a customer is to catch them young. this is why Amazon has a Amazon Student membership deal, and it could be why Amazon has started a pilot program to test affiliate partnerships with college bookstores.

There’s been no announcement from Amazon, and the program doesn’t even have a name yet, but for earlier this Fall Amazon started a year long pilot with the University of California – Davis bookstore.

UC Davis Stores has a dedicated portal page on Amazon.com (davis.amazon.com). The portal launched in mid-September and offers a selection of Amazon’s stock similar to what the bookstore would stock (in other words what a student is inclined to buy). This portal is functionally a part of Amazon (and not UC Davis Stores’s servers or stock system), and any order placed there is filled by Amazon via their network of warehouses and partners.

The school collects an affiliate fee on any sales made via the portal page, and they also get an affiliate fee on any purchases made by students that sign up for the Amazon Student membership program and list UC-Davis as their school. On an unrelated note, college students can sign up for a free 6 month trial of Amazon Student; benefits include free 2-day shipping and Prime Instant Video.

According to Amazon, UC-Davis is the only school participating in the pilot, which is planned to last a year and will also include the installation of Amazon Lockers in a couple locations on the UC-Davis campus. But there are no plans for this pilot to integrate Amazon Source, the recently launched program which encourages indie retailers to sell the Kindle in their stores in exchange for a small commission on hardware and ebook sales.

That program has proved exceptionally unpopular among a number of exceedingly vocal pundits, booksellers, and the “Death to Amazon” crowd at Melville House books, but I don’t think college bookstores will feel the same way. There’s a chance they will look at their market position rationally and acknowledge the fact that cash-strapped students are going to do their best to avoid the higher prices in the college bookstore anyway.

Jason Lorgan, the director of UC Davis Stores, is in favor of the program because he realized that the bookstore was not going to take away any of Amazon’s market share, so he might as well profit from it.

According to the NACS Campus Marketplace newsletter, Lorgan said: “We have all kinds of marketing programs to drive people into the store, but the truth is most college stores have about 50% market share today. Do I want to get a small piece of that 50% I don't have, or do I just want to give it up? Consumers have a lot of choices and all retailers have to adapt to the fact that they are just one of many options.”

And Lorgan is not the only one to note that students are avoiding the college bookstore; earlier this year ed tech startup Akedemos commissioned a poll of college and university CFOs. 89% of the respondents in that survey believed that students are increasingly turning away from campus-based bookstores in favor of third-party providers. Cost was cited as being the primary reason for students to bypass the college bookstore (78%).

College bookstores don’t have the same position that they held 20 years ago, and thanks to laws like the Higher Education Opportunity Act, passed by Congress in 2008, they’re probably never going to regain it.

So if college bookstore management are smart they will welcome it with open arms.

Well, Follett and B&N College won’t; these 2 companies operate around 1500 college bookstores under contract (Follett is larger, with 800 odd stores). But the several thousand stores that run either independently or under the management of the university should consider the deal Amazon has with UC Davis Stores (assuming the pilot works out).

And it would be a smart move for Amazon; in the long run it will probably reap dividends as the students graduate and continue to shop with Amazon. A similar ploy certainly worked with me; I got my start at Amazon via the Amazon Student program (a long time a go, back before it included streaming video).

From his cultured handsome looks to his vast fortune, Antonio “Tony” Viscolli is every girl’s dream. Robin comes from a blistering past, struggling for survival in a cold, cruel world. Robin never had a chance to dream of a white wedding gown or a prince charming. Instead, her dreams were nightmares — dark and clouded with fear and desperation. By the time Tony thaws her heart, she has known hunger, poverty, violence, and want.

For months, Tony courted the blond beauty with the sapphire eyes. He showered with attention, respect, and charm and covered her in diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. Finally, Robin came to understand God’s love for her as imitated by the unconditional love Tony freely offered. On a sunny Florida beach, Tony proposed. Back in bitter cold Boston, doubts about becoming a billionaire’s bride begin to burden her hopes for happiness.

As the date draws inexorably near and the pressure mounts, Robin questions whether she is truly the woman God has made for him. Is she the girl of his dreams? His vast material wealth begins to overwhelm her. Nightmares from a forgotten past return in full force, reminding Robin of an even deeper and more terrifying prospect. Will she give in to her insecurities and cancel Boston’s “Royal Wedding” for good? Or, with God’s guidance, can Tony sacrifice everything to prove to his beloved Robin her true worth.

Like Sweet Entertainment? Confessions of a 16-Year-Old Virgin Lips by Cindy M. Hogan – VL. Virgin Lips. You may not have heard of it, but where I live, it’s a thing with a card, even if it is a figurative card. Maybe that’s a bit strange. I mean, what teenage girl isn’t interested in kissing? Locking lips definitely interested me, but the drama that came with it didn’t. No kissing, no drama. Simple.

Like Fairy Tales? The Curse Girl by Kate Avery Ellison – When Bee is imprisoned in a magical, cursed house because of her father’s selfish choices, she has just one plan … escape! But she must solve a riddle and help her fellow prisoners break the curse that binds them all before she can leave, and that is proving more difficult than she originally thought thanks to the bitter young master of the house, Will. Like Cute Crushes? Chasing Puberty by Kat Brookes – Puberty has left high school freshman Logan Stanley behind. Join her on her journey as she discovers that being a true ‘It’ girl is only a state of mind — you just have to believe!

The Laird of Kinfairlie has helped his sisters, each a gem in her own right, to find husbands. Now the laird himself seeks to wed, and pins his hopes on The Snow White Bride.

Lady Eleanor knows better than to dream of romance and love. Married twice to secure her father’s alliances, she has learned that she is desirable only for her fortune. When the Laird of Kinfairlie’s sisters ask her to wed their brother, Alexander, Eleanor agrees, expecting only to save herself from danger. But Alexander is like no man she’s known before, a man more interested in courting her smile than her obedience, a man who values her counsel as much as her newly awakened passion…and a man unaware that Eleanor is the key to a fortune that could ensure the future of everything he holds dear.

Now, ruthless enemies will stop at nothing to secure Eleanor’s capture. Will she dare to trust her new husband before it’s too late for her, for Alexander, and for Kinfairlie?

“The characters were vivid and believable, the writing was fast paced….and the concept was a delightful original twist on a classic fairy tale theme.” -V. Wright

A Fairy Godmother is not some overgrown pixie in a pink tutu. She's a guardian and a warrior specially trained to protect Cinderella's descendants. Lilliana Skye is undercover at a Texas high school on her first assignment to save one of Cinderella's troubled great-granddaughters. But everything goes terribly wrong. Her Cinderella, Jess, hates her. Then there's Jess's brother, he's, well, he's dangerous. Falling in love with a human is strictly forbidden, not to mention . . . deadly. Jessica Harrison doesn't believe in fairytale magic or happily-ever-afters. The death of her oldest brother nuked her world and ripped her family apart. Grief sucks. Jess is tough, angry, and so intelligent it's scary. If she ever did see a mythical fairy she would probably stomp it into oblivion with her army boots.

Emotions, magic, and all that supernatural, unquantifiable, nonsense are a waste of her time. She tossed them out of her life after her brother died. Science and math –she can depend on those things. However, there is still someone Jess cares deeply about and that's her other brother, Jake. He's the only family member she really has left and she's fiercely protective. When Jake meets Lilliana, the new girl, he falls hard. Code red alarms go off in Jess's head. She can't let her brother fall in love with a lunatic who claims to be her Fairy Godmother. Lilliana tries to stay away from him. Falling in love with a human is against the rules. Maybe if she didn't have to protect Jake and Jess she might be able to keep her wayward heart in check. But someone from the fairy realm is trying to kill all three of them and Lilliana has to find out why before it's too late.

Thai Lies

Thai Lies is a memoir inspired novel about a heartbroken love pulled apart with dreams shattered that survives the trials of time, distance, custom, and a life versus death struggle to be rekindled again. It was the mid 70′s. The Vietnam War continued to wind down in a frenzy, leaving respectable Thai girls sheltered, lest one risk being branded a GI going-home trophy. Home from overseas college graduation, Ta didn’t seem to care. Opening her home for a summer of discovery to classmates, Tom and Mike, she ignored a few raised eyebrows since the rare invitation had come from her mom, drowning out ulterior-motive mumbled objections, exhumed by her father.

After all, what harm could it do? Everyone in their social circle knew that Ta, as a Bangkok mayor’s daughter, was engaged to Joey, its governor’s son. Their marriage was to be the event of the year; two rich political families joined together, their interests' one. Only there was a taboo-ridden secret. Ta had no intention of going through with the engagement. Tom was much more than just a casual friend. But because of a promise to keep that fact hidden until she felt comfortable enough to confront them on her own, his oath became a strangled leash pulling back and forth between her world and his for nearly a decade.

As long as he kept his word everyone else was in control and over his life he had none. If he tried to hold out and wait for her to face up to her demons, there was no guarantee that either of them would still be the same person that fell in love. Cowardly betrayal, obsessive jealously, an overseas kidnapping, and gun-wielding threats always seemed to get in the way. Not until two governments got burly involved did her father overhear the truth. But how he reacted, almost didn’t matter, as the fortune teller’s fatal prediction intervened, determined to keep them apart forever.
